Associated Press reports today that Gore headed to the UN Climate Conference to encourage the US to take the lead in change. Europe threatened to “boycott U.S.-led climate talks next month unless Washington compromises on emissions reductions” It’s about time the “1st world” started pulling their weight on these issues. It’s disheartening to see poor countries (like Bali, host of the 2007 UN Climate Talk) that have been exploited for centuries, being expected to take the lead in causes where they aren’t producing the issue in the first place.
Due to the discouraged outlook of the other leaders present (thinking the US wouldn’t agree the same terms as the rest) Gore urged “delegates to reach agreement even without the backing of the United States, saying President Bush’s successor, who will take office in January 2009, would likely be more supportive of binding cuts.”

Here’s a video of Gore’s speech.
